Our mission is to empower underprivileged youth and women in Louisiana, with interest in aviation and aerospace, by facilitating and providing educational opportunities within the industry, inspiring them to follow their dreams of reaching the sky and beyond.
While complex socioeconomic issues in Louisiana require a broad range of intricate solutions, our desire is to simply make a difference in a way that is significant enough to impact those who strive for more.
Why Louisiana?
Our beautiful state has much to offer. From unique cultures and renowned cuisine, to insightful history and diverse ecosystems. Several residents are known for their friendly demeanor, and love a reason to gather and celebrate.
While there’s plenty to appreciate, there is also much work to be done to help improve the lives of many Louisianans.
This includes women and children, who rank among the highest in poverty compared to the rest of the U.S. Our state places poorly in overall health, and while slowly improving, still struggles greatly in education. Last year, over 51% of households weren’t able to afford basic necessities.
Data reports that households with low income, lack of proper healthcare, educational challenges and racial disparities, are most likely to have less access to higher education opportunities.
Aviation and Aerospace Impact
The aviation and aerospace industries are significant to our global economy. They play a crucial role in providing major discoveries, developments and advancements for society. Their impact extends to services essential to the public, health, safety, environment, social progress, crisis response and economic growth.
This can include:
- Agricultural Support
- Emergency Medical Services, Humanitarian Aid, Search and Rescue
- Advancements in Technology, Science, Engineering
- Transport, Trade & Tourism
- Military & Defense
Louisiana is home to several major aviation and aerospace companies that continue to rapidly grow. Roles in manufacturing, assembly, maintenance, engineering and transport are just some of the significant areas contributing to these key sectors.
Careers taking place on the ground, in the sky, or space are achievable through different educational pathways, offering residents countless opportunities in a powerful and impactful industry.
Exposure to these fields is important for underprivileged youth, and especially women. The percentage of women in aviation and aerospace is modest, but slowly increasing through years of hard work and advocacy. Scarlett Skies Initiative wishes to contribute to that growth. These are spaces that females have not commonly seen as a possibility to pursue, especially when navigating lack of support and representation.
Whether it be through educational outreach, scholarships, or advocacy, we strive to show women and children that they too can find their place in these spaces, accomplish extraordinary things, and make a stellar impact.
